Ret. Master Sergeant Alfred Douglas Hammock Obituary

Ret. Master Sergeant Alfred Douglas Hammock, 84, of Lanett, Alabama passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, November 28, 2022.

He was born in Shawmut, Alabama on August 29, 1938 to the late Alfred Franklin Hammock and Annie Lois Langford Hammock.  He was also preceded in death by two grandchildren Courtney Hammock and Bradley Smith.

Doug spent many of his younger years growing up in the Shawmut, Langdale, Huguley and Lanett communities. He and his family later moved to Huguley, Alabama where he attended Huguley schools from the first grade until the eighth.  He graduated as a member of the Class of 1956 from Valley High School.

He joined the United States Air Force and began an amazing journey serving his country.  He spent over 22 years in the Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant.   During his time in the Air Force, he traveled across the country and the world. He visited or was stationed in many different places and, at times, lived abroad with his family.

After his retirement from the United States Air Force, he relocated back to the Valley and attended Southern Union Community College, where he earned an associates degree.  He also began working for the East Alabama Water and Sewer District, where he retired after 32 years of service with the district.

Doug was a man with many different skills and interests in life.  He loved to travel, he loved to ride his motorcycles, and he was a RC (Remote Control) Flyer and enthusiast who built his own planes and would fly them locally at the Shawmut Airport Site.  His RC planes were so large that they required a license from the FCC to operate.  He was also a gifted mechanic who could work on cars and the motorcycles that he so loved to ride.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and having his family visit him.  He loved to explore and find the “hidden gems” of restaurants to enjoy a new and wonderful meal.  Doug also loved old Western movies.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Susan Hammock; children, Michael Hammock (Ruth), Tacoma, WA., Michelle Richardson (Rusty), Lanett, AL, Melissa Smith (Marc), Valley, AL; grandchildren, Nicholas Darling (Natalie), Puyallup, WA., Amanda Hammock, Tacoma, WA., Holly Hammock, Tacoma, WA., Robert Bryan Richardson, Lanett, AL., Mary Elizabeth Richardson, Lanett, AL., Brandy Richardson, Lanett, AL., Matthew Smith (Karen), Valley, AL.; great-grandchildren, Chase Darling, Puyallup, WA., Symphony Hammock, Tacoma, WA., Ezekial Ige, Tacoma, WA., Andrew Smith, Valley, AL., Allyson Smith, Valley, AL., Noah Smith, Valley, AL., Grant Smith, Valley, AL., Madelyn Smith, Valley, AL.; sister, Diane Holmberg, Chapel Hill, NC.; and his furbaby “Buddy”.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Doug’s family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Compassus Hospice of Roanoke and his caregiver, Lillian Moss, for the care and compassion given to Doug.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Doug’s memory to a charity of your choice or to Compassus Hospice of Roanoke.
