Joe Parks Howell, Jr. Obituary

We come together today to honor and celebrate the life of Joe Parks Howell, Jr. (USN Ret.), affectionately known as Joe, who passed away peacefully on March 17, 2024, in Lanett, Alabama. Born on August 21, 1927, in LaGrange, Georgia, Joe's life was a testament to service, education, and family.

Joe's journey began as a proud graduate of West Point High School in 1944. His dedication to his country was evident early on as he entered the United States Navy, where he would go on to have a distinguished career. While serving, Joe furthered his education, earning a bachelor's degree in Industrial Management from Alabama Polytechnic Institute. His commitment to excellence led him to become a Naval Aviator in 1948 and he was commissioned in the Navy in 1949. Joe retired as a Commander in 1970, leaving behind a legacy of honor and discipline.

After his naval career, Joe's passion for knowledge and teaching led him to Auburn University, where he earned a degree in Education. He then shared his wisdom and experience with young minds as a teacher at Shawmut Elementary School for 13 years. Joe's impact on his students was profound, and his dedication to education remains an inspiration to all who knew him.

Joe was also a longtime member of the Valley Lions Club, where he contributed to his community with the same vigor and integrity that he brought to every aspect of his life. His commitment to service was unwavering, and he made a lasting difference in the lives of many through his involvement.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Joe was a skilled locksmith, a craft he learned from his father. He took great joy in helping others, often using his skills to assist those in need. His kindness and thoughtfulness were hallmarks of his character, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Above all, Joe cherished his family. He is survived by his loving children, Joe P. Howell, III (Janet), Jane A. Fuller-Blackburn (Tab), and Jonathan C. Howell; his adoring grandchildren, Jessica Howell Storay (Tiffany), Bailey Howell, Steven Jarvis, Kimberly Jarvis, Ryan Fuller, Carlen Howell, David Howell, Jessica Lundgren (Scott), and Turner Blackburn; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Bennett Storay, Evelyn Shelnut, and Violet Lundgren. Joe's legacy will continue to live on through them. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce Annette Smallwood Howell; his parents, Joe and Essie Howell; and his daughter-in-law, Leigh Howell.

Joe's life was one of kindness, intelligence, and thoughtfulness. He loved his grandchildren deeply and took immense pride in their accomplishments. His presence brought warmth and wisdom to every room, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we say farewell to Joe Parks Howell, Jr., we reflect on a life well-lived, a life of service, education, and love. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched.
