Fletcher B. Helms, Jr. Obituary

Fletcher B. Helms, Jr. passed away Thursday, July 2, 2020 at his home in West Point, GA. after a valiant cancer journey.

Fletcher is survived by his wife Faye Carter Helms; his daughter Melanie H. Hunkapiller (Bill) of Tallahassee, FL; his grandsons Brantley “Fletcher” Helms (Ashley) and William Martin Hunkapiller III; his great grandson Forrest Helms; his step daughters Marcy Cutrer (Jeff) and Jennifer Leonard (Tom) ; step grandsons Carter Cutrer and Frankie Leonard and nieces Jolynn Maddox and Debbie Helms. He is predeceased by his first wife, Kathy Helms; his son, Brantley Dallas Helms; his parents, Fletcher B. Helms, Sr and Gladys E. Helms; his brother Joe Helms; his sister Hazel H. Maddox.

Fletcher was born in Thomaston, Georgia on February 22, 1940 to Fletcher Brantley Helms, Sr and Gladys Ellington Helms. He graduated high school from R. E. Lee Institute in Thomaston, GA in 1958 and achieved a Bachelor’s of business degree from Georgia State University after proudly serving in the USAF in the Strategic Air Command of the 4245th in Wichita Falls, TX.

Fletcher was an avid golfer, a huge Georgia Bulldog fan, a strong Christian that loved his church where he taught Sunday school and spread his special brand of joy, an ability to dance that sometimes defied the laws of physics, loved to listen to music and loved his friends and family so well that we will never forget how special he made us all feel. He retired as Vice President of Sales with Wehadkee Yarn Mills with twenty-six years of service and a lifetime of memories with special friends and customers in the textile industry. Anyone who met Fletcher walked away feeling better for having known him. He is a special light that will be missed, but never forgotten.

Due to the current gathering restrictions, the family will have a graveside service in Thomaston, GA at Southview Cemetery on Monday, July 6th at 1:00P.M. EDT.  We ask that any attendees practice social distancing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Fletcher Helms to First United Methodist Church of West Point, 206 E 7th Street, West Point GA 31833 or Chattahoochee Hospice, 6 Medical Park North, Valley AL 36854. Johnson Brown Funeral Home in Valley, AL is in charge of arrangements.
